The afternoon in Leon - cathedral of Leon

I am looking forward to the center of Leon. My hotel is walking distance to the cathedral and clauster museum.

The cathedral of Leon was built in a time when Europe was in a cultural and political euphoria since the moors were beaten in 1212 and their reign over Southern Europe came to an end. All cities invested in new buildings and each city wanted to build a bigger church.  The building style so far was dominated by Roman style - heavy roofs which had to be held up by strong walls and pillars and therefore few or no windows. With this new sense of self confidence people wanted to build churches with much more light and therefore started to use different material for the roof which allowed them to have huge windows all over.

The cathedral of Leon was built in only 50 years and is one of the purest gothic style churches thee is. The back then 5000 inhabitants of city of Leon organized this ambitious project with their limited resources. See for yourself - it's a delight to see this unique cathedral.

I use the rest of the afternoon to organize my next 12 days until Santiago. I never realy know how far I will come each day, but I need some kind of structure and hotel options ( the German within me:)).  And of course I am watching the euro cup game of Spain like everybody else here in Leon.
