As a pilgrim you can participate in the mass at 20.00 held in each village you visit. I decide to go since I have not been to church for some time...or stop - it was only yesterday in Logrono! Time flies:))
Only 15 other pilgrims from the round about 200 pilgrims in Najera participate - normal low turnout for a. Monday. The priest spoke all in SPanish which helps me to further improve my knowledge in Spanish, but which kept me from understanding everything. At the end of the mass the pilgrims were asked to come forward and ring a special bell next to the Altar 3 times: for Jezus, for Mary and for St. James - interesting ceremony.
After that the priest invited us to the church office to get our credentials. I forgot my pilgrim passport, but he still gives me a stamp with date on a small sheet of paper to be glued into my passport. He also gives me a prayer on a card with the face of the head of 'Opus Dei' founder. I am ready to hand it back to him, because I totally oppose the fascist statements this guy made about the Holocoust. There is extremist in each church - AND we have to stand up against them.
Not only in church - look at the US presidential selection. It is ok for a candidate like Trump to make fascist statements - and the class of low educated white people hails him. We have to stand up against those Fashist in Germany from AfD - some of what the intelligent people of this movement say maybe right, but at the end of the day it's a brown, right extremist party and as People believing in the values of Democracy we have to oppose!!
What role can I play in this context? I need to find out. Good night
